Google Says ‘Deals Days’ Work to Boost Summer Shopping

People are shopping more in July than they used to thanks to deals days, which Amazon made popular through its annual Prime Day sale. A survey of 1,017 people conducted by Ipsos for Google (May 31 – June 2, 2024) found that 44% of shoppers said summer deal days prompt them to shop more than they normally would.

Google also shared that in recent years, online searches for “deals” have spiked in mid-July, surpassing search interest in “vacation.”

To help shoppers, Google said “Shop deals” on Search now features a fresh deals carousel, showcasing the most relevant promotions and markdowns from the last 24 hours in electronics, apparel, toys, and more.

It also introduced a “Member Pricing” feature: “See member-pricing on products you’re considering, from retailers like BestBuy, Petco and Minted. At a glance, you can see how much a product costs regularly plus its price across multiple membership programs – helping you make the most informed decision.”

In a blog post this week, Google shared shopping tips and additional findings from its survey. It found that 51% of surveyed shoppers who had made a purchase during deals day last year said finding the item on sale was the biggest motivator. The second biggest motivator: early-bird holiday shopping (20%).
