Free-to-play Marvel Rivals announced for Xbox while PS5 players get exclusive costume

We’ll be able to go after the Marvel Rivals achievements after all, and perhaps will have another contender for the best free Xbox games, as NetEase Games has now confirmed that its superhero team-based PvP shooter Marvel Rivals is coming to Xbox Series X|S. The news came as part of Sony’s State of Play, which likely explains why PS5 players will get an exclusive Spider-Man costume, but all players across all platforms will be able to try it out when the closed beta test goes live in July.

Marvel Rivals announced for Xbox Series X|S and PS5

“The merciless clash between tyrannical dictator Doctor Doom and his future counterpart from the year 2099 has forced countless universes to collide in the Timestream Entanglement, creating new worlds and crises unknown,” the Marvel Rivals team says. “Now, Super Heroes and Villains from across the multiverse must fight together and against one another as disparate groups each seek to best both Dooms before one achieves domination of these realities. Familiar faces become newfound foes while former enemies become the greatest of allies in Marvel Rivals!”

The game lets you go about destroying iconic Marvel locations in 6v6 battles, fighting as heroes or villains (who can combine their powers for Team-Up Skills) from the Marvel Multiverse with characters from the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more. NetEase Games also plans to introduce post-launch updates as well as new heroes and other new content.

A closed beta test is set for July, and will add Venom and Adam Warlock to the line-up along with a new map and new Team-Ups. This closed beta test will be available on all platforms, while PS5 players will also get an exclusive Scarlet Spider costume when the game launches.

It can be frustrating to see exclusive content for one platform over another. We saw the same thing happen with Hogwarts Legacy’s PlayStation exclusive content, although that was more substantial content with an in-game shop, quest, cosmetic set, and dungeon. The good news is we’ll finally get all of that on Xbox when the Hogwarts Legacy summer update arrives next week.
