Free fitness classes offered at the FitLot in East Helena’s Kennedy Park

The following is a news release from Montana AARP sent on June 6, 2024.

Helena, Mont. – AARP Montana and East Helena are partnering to bring free FitLot circuit-based fitness classes to Helena area residents throughout the summer.

Located in Kennedy Park, adjacent to the playground, the FitLot Park features a range of all-weather athletic stations, forming an engaging exercise circuit suitable for individuals of all ages.

AARP donated the FitLot park to East Helena in 2020 as part of its national initiative to commemorate its 60th anniversary.  AARP generously donated FitLot parks across all 50 states, emphasizing their dedication to promoting healthy aging and supporting local communities.

“This initiative truly showcases our commitment to cultivating community connections as well as healthy lifestyles,” said Tim Summers, AARP Montana State Director. “The outdoor fitness equipment not only encourages individuals of all ages to stay fit but also offers an opportunity to socialize. Additionally, the FitLot is accessible to the public free of charge.”

The FitLot stations in Kennedy Park provide high-quality equipment, including ellipticals, benches, dip and pull-up bars, and resistance band stations. Each station is designed to accommodate varying levels of resistance, allowing users to customize their workout based on their strength and fitness goals. Detailed instructions are posted beside each station to ensure proper exercise execution.

Recognizing that many visitors to the fitness circuit may require guidance in structuring their workouts, AARP Montana and the City of East Helena have collaborated to offer a series of complimentary classes at the Kennedy Park FitLot.

Led by Bri Martini, an American Council of Exercise certified trainer, the FitLot classes take place from 9-10 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the summer. Martini’s expertise lies in closely monitoring participants, particularly active older adults, and guiding them through exercises that are beneficial for their overall well-being.

Nancy Andersen, AARP Montana Director of Outreach, highlighted the advantages of incorporating FitLot exercises into one’s fitness routine, stating, “The FitLot provides a wide range of exercise options suitable for all individuals, offering strength training benefits that improve metabolism, bone density, and joint health. It’s a unique opportunity for the community to access exercise equipment without any cost or restrictions.”

The one-hour classes aim to educate participants on proper movement, safe equipment usage, and the format of a FitLot circuit training class. Designed to accommodate all ages and abilities, the classes provide a relaxed and supportive environment.

Classes commenced the first week of June and continue through September 6, taking place at 9 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Interested individuals must register in advance as space is limited. Participants are advised to wear comfortable attire, suitable shoes, and bring water.
