Fitness legend Richard Simmons has passed away at the age of 76, as reported by TMZ.
According to law enforcement sources who spoke with the outlet, police and fire department personnel responded to a call from Simmons’ housekeeper shortly before 10 AM on Saturday, July 13. Upon arrival, he was pronounced dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected at this time and authorities are currently treating it as a natural death.
Simmons gained fame in the 1970s and ’80s by opening a chain of gyms, including The Anatomy Asylum in Los Angeles. He also released numerous fitness tapes and DVDs, such as the beloved Sweatin’ to the Oldies in addition to many others. Known for his positive and flamboyant energy, Simmons became a household name. However, in his later years, he retreated from the public eye, finding the demands of maintaining his persona in the spotlight overwhelming.
Simmons has been active on his public Facebook page, interacting frequently with his fans. On Friday, July 12, he posted thanking his fans for their birthday wishes, writing, “Thank you…I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday.”
The post already has tons of comments from fans who found out about his passing leaving their condolences. “Richard we love you so much and now you’re gone just like that. Rest peacefully sweet man,” said one fan, while another commented, “Richard Simmons you were our bright light! You were loved immensely. Rest well friend.”
Simmons’s cause of death is unknown at this time as the story is still developing.
