‘Euphoria’: Production On Season 3 To Start In January 2025 With Main Cast Returning
HBO
The chances of Euphoria airing its third season next year have increased after HBO revealed that the youth-skewing drama is set to enter production in January.
Deadline reported in March that filming plans for the Sam Levinson-created series had been pushed back with Levinson still working on scripts.
Filming will now start at the top of next year with all of the principle cast returning. Also, expect a time jump between the second and third seasons.
At the time of the announcement in March, cast members were being allowed to take other jobs such as Eric Dane joining Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho in Prime Video’s thriller series Countdown.
HBO is cognizant of this move so will film around certain actors’ schedules. It’s not clear whether the third season will be its last but it’s hard to imagine HBO finding time in its stars’ schedule for future seasons given that the show has created a number of stars including breakouts such as Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and recurring player Colman Domingo.
Dane, Maude Apatow, Storm Reid, Alexa Demie, Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Dominic Fike also star in the series.
Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO programming and head of HBO drama series and films, said, “I am thrilled that we are ready to begin production on Euphoria in January. We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam and this incredible cast. We look forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for the fans.”
The first season premiered in June 2019 and the second season launched in January 2022, with two one-hour specials airing in December 2020 and January 2021.
The show was hit by the writers and actors strikes in 2023 as well as the unexpected deaths of star Angus Cloud and executive producer Kevin Turen.
Given that the first two seasons are essentially set in high school, expect them to have grown up a bit.
In an August interview with Elle, Levinson described Season 3 as a “film noir” and teased that Zendaya‘s character of a recovering addict would “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world”.
Euphoria is set in the fictional town of East Highland, California, who seek hope while balancing the strains of love, loss, and addiction. The series is based on an Israeli show of the same name created by Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin.
Levinson executive produces with Ravi Nandan, Drake, Adel “Future” Nur, Zendaya, Will Greenfield, Ashley Levinson, Ron Leshem, Daphna Levin, Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein, Gary Lennon, Mirit Toovi, Tmira Yardeni, Yoram Mokady. The series is produced in partnership with A24.
