Emotional run ends for Birmingham-Southern baseball

The Birmingham-Southern baseball team walks off the field together with alumni of the program after losing to Wisconsin-Whitewater 11-10 in the Division III Baseball World Series. BSC was eliminated from the tournament on Sunday.

The Birmingham-Southern baseball team captured the hearts of the country and gave its school one last moment to shine before they turn out the lights.

They went out like champions, and heroes of a school and its city.

Birmingham-Southern was eliminated from the Division III Baseball World Series on Sunday, two days after the school closed its doors forever. It was a glorious run, ending with a dramatic, heartbreaking walk-off home run that gave Wisconsin-Whitewater a 11-10 victory.

JT Weisberg, the son of Panthers coach Jan Weisberg, said it best during Birmingham-Southern’s final post-game news conference.

“These last three weeks have been better than winning a championship,” JT Weisberg said, and added that the story of the Birmingham-Southern baseball team demonstrates “the power of people coming together with love.”

In a poignant scene that will be remembered forever, the Birmingham-Southern baseball team and alumni of the baseball program tipped their caps to fans before walking off the field as the final act of an incredible drama.
