Dorchester County road infrastructure project finishes phase early, under budget

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)—A Dorchester County road infrastructure project has completed phase 2B ahead of schedule and for less money than originally planned.

County officials said the U.S. 78 Phase 2B project was finished at $1.2 million under budget and included improvements that enhance safety conditions while improving traffic flow and capacity.

Some improvements to the area included:

–        A three-lane road section constructed for 1.6 miles about 0.25 miles west of SC-173 and 0.7 miles east of Campbell Thickett Road. Four-foot-wide paved shoulders and six-foot-wide grass shoulders were also added to the route.
–        A realignment of the U.S. 78 and US 178 intersections created both roads’ left and right turn lanes.
–        Resurfacing, four-foot-wide paved shoulders and six-foot-wide grass shoulders added for 0.1 miles near Campbell Thickett Road.

Officials explained that U.S. 78 is a critical evacuation route for county residents, making the improvements more important to the community.

“The successful completion of U.S. 78 Phase 2B is a major achievement for our community. It reflects our commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring the safety and convenience of our residents. We are proud to have completed this project ahead of schedule and under budget,” said Chairman Todd Friddle of Dorchester County Council.
