‘Don’t Be Sad’: Richard Simmons’ Brother Wants Fans to Celebrate Fitness Icon’s Life

Beloved fitness icon Richard Simmons passed away just one day after his 76th birthday, leaving fans everywhere in mourning. Many have been expressing their sadness over the news on social media, but Simmons’ family wants fans to focus on the joy the Sweatin’ to the Oldies star brought to the world.

On the official X account for Simmons, a message was shared that was written by Richard’s brother, Lenny Simmons. The message pointed out how Simmons spent decades trying his best to help as many other people as possible, and ideally, he should be remembered for how much he made the world a better place. With that said, Lenny also noted how the news was still shocking for the family, asking that fans continue to respect Simmons’ grieving loved ones at this time.

“Hello Everyone, I don’t want people to be sad about my brother,” the statement noted. “I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives. He truly cared about people. He called, wrote, and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer help. So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life! He was very excited about all of the upcoming ventures he was working on. We are in shock. Please respect the family at this difficult time.”

Many celebrities have also paid tribute to Simmons after his passing. Denise Austin, who was a friend of Simmons, shared a post including a few images of the two together. She also shared a screenshot of a Facebook post of Simmons celebrating Austin and their friendship. Austin said that her “heart is hurting” after learning about Simmons’ death.

Other celebrities to pay tribute include former daytime talk show hosts Ricki Lake and Sally Jessy Raphael. Each posted throwback photos with Simmons accompanied by touching messages of tribute. Pauly Shore, who will star in an unauthorized biopic of Simmons, also posted online about the loss of the fitness expert.

Shore noted, “I hope you’re at peace and twinkling up in the heavens… You’re one of a kind, Richard. An amazing life. An amazing story. They broke the dolphin shorts when they made you.”
