DHL to eliminate 120 jobs in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. — DHL eCommerce is closing a Raleigh distribution facility and eliminating at least 120 positions in the city — part of a broader relocation plan by the unit of global shipping giant DHL Group.

The company plans to close its facility off Gresham Lake Road in North Raleigh by the end of July and move the operations to a facility in Concord, the company said. The North Raleigh facility sits north of the intersection of U.S. 1 and Interstate 540.

The company reported the closure to the state Department of Commerce last week in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification.

Raleigh employees were given advance notice of the closure and were offered the opportunity to relocate to Concord or take a retention package designed to keep the facility staffed until it closes, the company said.

“In Concord, we will have a larger distribution center that will allow us to process more volume,” Andrea Scarpulla, a DHL eCommerce spokeswoman, said in an emailed statement. “This new building will better position us to support our strong customer base in North Carolina.”

The company plans to employ between 150 and 250 people in Concord. Staffing for shipping companies tends to increase during the holidays.

DHL eCommerce focuses on domestic and international delivery, with more than 35,000 people around the world moving more than 1 billion parcels each year, according to the company.

In North America, the company focuses on business-to-consumer domestic delivery within the U.S. as well as outbound international deliveries.
