Detroit Tigers, Bally Sports: Craig Monroe is off TV broadcasts due to allegations

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers and Bally Sports Detroit confirmed the absence of Craig Monroe on television broadcasts is due to allegations that were made on social media.

Monroe, the team’s primary television analyst alongside play-by-play voice Jason Benetti, hasn’t appeared on any broadcasts since the Tigers hosted the Milwaukee Brewers from June 7-9.

On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, WDIV received a statement from Bally Sports Detroit and the Tigers.

“Bally Sports Detroit and the Tigers are aware of the social media allegations and take them seriously,” the statement says. “As previously stated, Mr. Monroe has not been on the broadcast schedule and that will continue on an indefinite basis. We will have no further comment and any questions should be directed to Mr. Monroe.”

The social media allegations were made by a woman on Twitter and Instagram. She accuses Monroe of raping her when she was a child and he stayed with her family during his minor league career.

She said Monroe was playing for the Port Charlotte Rangers at the time. Monroe played 92 games in Port Charlotte in 1997, a full season in 1998, and 130 games in 1999.

She accused him of further sexual misconduct after his career advanced beyond Port Charlotte, including while he was with the Tigers.

So far, Monroe has not made an official statement.

The 47-year-old has been a member of the Tigers broadcast team for several years after playing in Detroit from 2003-2007. He spent 672 games as a Tiger during that span.

His MLB career spanned from 2001 to 2009 and included stops in Texas, Detroit, Chicago (Cubs), Minnesota, and Pittsburgh.
