For the first time since the launch of Delta Air Lines’ Premium Select product, the airline will offer it on transcontinental flights between New York and Los Angeles. From September 10, four of Delta’s daily operations between the two cities will have the new product.

Expanding Premium Select

Delta Air Lines is known for being a premium-heavy airline. With arguably the best business class product (or United Airlines Polaris) and service in the US airline industry, Delta has high standards. Today, Delta is the only airline in the ‘Big Three’ (Delta, United, and American Airlines) with inflight entertainment (IFE) at every seat on its mainline aircraft. United is working on retrofitting its planes but has not completed the project.

The Premium Select product was first launched in 2017 and was available on certain transatlantic and trans-Pacific flights. Since then, Delta has expanded the product to additional routes, but domestic passengers have never been able to access it. This is set to change beginning on September 10, when four of Delta’s eleven flights between New York and Los Angeles will feature the Premium Select product.

“This product has been a success internationally, especially following the recent investments we’ve made onboard, and we know that customers flying between New York and Los Angeles will enjoy the opportunity to treat themselves to a more spacious seat and premium experience.” – Maurico Parise, Vice President – Brand Experience Design, Delta Air Lines

According to an announcement earlier today, four of Delta’s daily operations between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport will feature the premium economy product. The aircraft that feature the product are Boeing 767s, which remain crucial to Delta’s widebody operations. Now that the aircraft have been retrofitted with the Premium Select product, the 767s offer four classes of service. Later in the year, the airline plans to bring its product to more flights.

What is different about Premium Select?

Delta’s Premium Select product is a premium economy product, but like all its cabins, Delta has a trademarked name. In the Premium Select cabin, passengers can expect an elevated experience similar to business class but not as nice. The Premium Select seat offers more space and recline than in the economy cabin. Additionally, passengers receive noise-canceling earphones, a memory-foam pillow, a wider seat, and premium amenities like a blanket and amenity kit.

The premium experience does not stop there. Passengers in Premium Select are given better dining options, like braised turkey meatballs with arrabbiata sauce, mashed potatoes, and sauteed kale, or a summer vegetable lasagna with a parmesan cream sauce and cherry tomatoes on flights from JFK to LAX. The airline will offer a French onion frittata with gruyere breadcrumbs, Canadian bacon and roasted cherry tomatoes, or croissant monkey bread with a peach raspberry compote for breakfast.

Flying east, passengers will have access to different meal options, like mustard-marinated chicken thigh with mashed potatoes, kale, and roasted tomatoes or baked rigatoni with broccoli and a bechamel sauce topped with parmesan. For breakfast, the selection will also be different. Though Premium Select passengers are not eligible for Delta SkyClub access based on their fare, they have access to dedicated check-in and baggage services and board flights as part of Zone 2.
