Day One Fitness serves those with neurological diseases, disorders through high intensity exercise

BEECH ISLAND, S.C. (WJBF) –  Day One Fitness is a non-profit organization serving people with neurological diseases and disorders through high intensity exercise.

For this episode of “Your Hometown Road Trip” the team stopped in and spoke with Executive Director, Danielle Williams about the facility and what it does for the community.

What is Day One Fitness?

“We are a specialty gym, so we serve a very unique set of people. We have classes that are high intensity in nature and their really specific for those with a neurological condition. We have a boxing class which is the core class, it’s high intensity, we want to get that heart rate up. That is where all the research shows that it can slow the progression of those diseases, and that’s what we aim to do here. We have a whole variety of classes that address many different things, like range of motion, falling, and preventing you from falling, making sure we’re working the muscles.” .

Why is it important to have this kind of place?

“It’s important to come here for these types of classes because one, we have a huge sense of community here, so you’re going through the same things that everyone else is going through, you can lean on each other. It’s a warm, welcoming environment.”

How long have you been here and what’s the reaction when people come in?

“We’ve been in existence since 2015, but we took over this location in 2018. I think people don’t expect to walk in and see this big of a space and they don’t expect to see the exercise people are doing. I know when I first did an exercise I had no Idea what I was in for.”

What can the community do to help?

“One of the best ways to help us out is volunteering. Coming in and showing your support by helping with a class, donating, not just time, but if you want to donate to help us keep our lights on, to pay the operational bills, and really just spreading awareness that we’re here, because there’s so much of the community that don’t know we’re here.”

Day One Fitness hopes that more people find out about what they do, and they will continue to help those who need it.
