Cody Rhodes teases a cross-promotional star as Trick Williams’ next NXT title challenger

The main attraction on tonight’s episode of NXT was a special appearance by Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes.

Cody took care of main roster business with a brief promo on his Clash at the Castle opponent, AJ Styles, before NXT Champion Trick Williams came out for a champ-to-champ chat.

After they exchanged some pleasantries and teased a future WWE championship match for Trick, Cody explained why he was on NXT tonight. General Manager Ava gave him the authority to announce that Williams’ next title challenger will be determined on next week’s episode in a 25-man over-the-top-rope Battle Royal. The winner fights Trick for the gold at NXT Heatwave on July 7.

The kicker came at the very end when Cody said Trick will know some of these 25 wrestlers in the match, but others might come from different locker rooms:

NXT and TNA just featured a cross-promotional program between NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez and TNA Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace, so perhaps now it’s time for the men to get in on the fun. There may have been have been some references to TNA star Joe Hendry on WWE commentary this week, for what it’s worth.

Before the show ended, NXT stars Ethan Page, Shawn Spears, and Lexis King all declared for the Battle Royal.
