KINGSFORD — Cheryl Lynn Galante, 75, passed away on May 20, 2024, at the Optalis Health and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsford.

Cheryl was born on Sept. 8, 1948, in Iron Mountain, to the late William and Adelle (Bourgeois) Menghini. She graduated from the Iron River High School in 1966.

She made her way to Manhattan, where she worked many years as a beautician. She moved to Staten Island, and eventually settled in Old Bridge, N.J. Cheryl embarked on a new career in her 40s by returning to college and obtaining her R.N. license. She worked many years at the Staten Island hospital in the obstetric unit. She loved her job of taking care of newborn babies. She retired in 2018. She moved to Northville, Mich. Cheryl always longed to return to the Upper Peninsula.

Her nieces were able to fulfill her wish by moving her to Kingsford two weeks before her death. Cheryl always loved the Upper Peninsula and considered it home. She traveled back as often as possible to visit family and enjoyed many summers at her sister Yvonne’s home on Sunset Lake.

She was also blessed with many dear friends back East. They expressed their many memories and photographs on her Facebook page. They have made arrangements to have a Mass in her honor on her birthday at her parish in Old Bridge.

Cheryl is survived by her sisters, Yvonne M. Meyer of Escanaba and Gloria Hale of Mauston, Wis., as well as a brother, Mark (Karin) Menghini of Northville. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Cheryl is preceded in death by her beloved son, Anthony Galante; and her brother, William Menghini Jr.

Visitation will be held at the Kingsford Funeral Home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 7, with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m. at the American Martyrs Church. Msgr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in the Norway Township Cemetery next to her son.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit Closet, 201 E. Breitung Avenue, Kingsford, MI 49802.
