Camp Cadet introduces law enforcement jobs to Central Pa. kids

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — During summer break camps are a popular destination for kids, but one camp in Bedford County looks a little different.

Camp Cadet shows kids the importance of law enforcement while teaching them teamwork. Kids from all across Central Pennsylvania got an exclusive look into law enforcement. The week-long program is similar to the state police academy as it teaches discipline and self-esteem.

“This is a positive reinforcement, positive outlook on life. This is get the youngsters kinda set on the right page to benefit them in the future,” Jacob Rhymestine, Public Information Officer for Troop G PSP said.

The goal of the camp is to introduce kids to the criminal justice system and establish an early positive relationship with law enforcement.

“It’s a phenomenal program for the kids, it gives behind-the-scenes experience of what our academy program is like. There’s shooting, obstacle courses, morning runs involved with the camp,” Rhymestine added.

Instructors from different law enforcement agencies such as the helicopter aviation unit, K-9 unit, CERT Team and Bomb squad talked to the kids with the purpose of teaching them structure and respect.

“I think this is gonna help me with how I wake up in the morning. I never make my bed in the morning but I’m gonna wake up to make my bed, not just lay in bed all morning,” 14-year-old David Hershey, from Bedford High School, said.

Camp counselors say that kids who attend the camp often go on to become state troopers or part of the law enforcement system.
