BWI airport suffers temporary power outage, officials say

Power went out for a time Saturday at BWI Marshall Airport, stranding passengers on grounded airplanes and in the terminal, according to officials and witnesses.

The air traffic control tower was “briefly evacuated,” a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said.

A power outage occurred about 5:30 p.m. and “impacted” the airport, a BWI spokesman said. He said power was “fully restored” about two hours later.

Passengers and would-be passengers complained on social media about conditions.

The “entire airport has lost power: no lighting or AC and it is sweltering,” read one message.

Another said “I see the plane I’m supposed to get on right outside the window, but with no power to get the gangway to it to unload.”

A third described being on an airplane that was “stuck on the tarmac for an hour or so now.”

It was not clear what caused the loss of power. A communications manager for BGE, the main public utility serving the area of the airport, said the company “did not register an outage on its equipment prior to, during, or after the outage at BWI.”
