Bob’s Stores is closing all 21 locations, including 1 in N.J., after 70 years in business

Discount retailer Bob’s Stores is closing its brick-and-mortar locations, including one in New Jersey, after the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

As part of the bankruptcy filing, Bob’s stores will shut down all 21 remaining locations permanently and liquidate its inventory in the weeks to come.

“We regret that our financial position necessitated the liquidation of Bob’s Stores,” Bob’s Stores president Dave Barton said in a press release. “Bob’s has been a stalwart of our local communities for nearly 70 years, and we know our customers remember us as having been there for major moments in their lives.”

Bob’s has stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

The New Jersey location closing soon is at 3710 US-9 in Freehold.

All stores are offering discounts from 30-70% off on items from clothing to shoes in a “Going Out of Business Sale.”

Bob’s originally started out as “Bob’s Surplus” in Connecticut in 1954 until TJX acquired it in 2003. Five years later, TJX sold the chain to private equity firms, which sold it again to GoDigital Media group in 2022.

The discount retailer is the latest chain to close locations, joining other companies, such as Red Lobster and Rite Aid.
