BNI Detects Bank Accounts Linked to Online Gambling
Jakarta. State-owned Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) is collaborating with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to detect accounts used by online gambling operators, its CEO said on Friday.
The bank has the technology to identify gambling accounts before reporting them to the OJK for further action, Royke Tumilaar said.
“When we detect indications of gambling accounts, we report them to the OJK. We have the technology to do that,” he said at BNI Tower in Jakarta.
He added that many accounts related to online gambling have been frozen with the OJK’s permission, though he did not provide specific details.
The country’s financial institutions and regulators have joined the government’s crackdown on online gambling.
The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) recently reported that it had identified around 1,000 lawmakers at the national, provincial, and district levels who were involved in online gambling.
President Joko Widodo’s government also established an inter-ministerial task force against online gambling to take down gambling websites and arrest gambling operators, including social media personalities who promote gambling websites.
