GILLETTE, Wyo. — The Campbell County Board of Commissioners plans to submit a protest letter opposing the BLM’s recently announced plans to phase out coal mining in the Powder River Basin in the next 20 years.

“We urge BLM to reconsider this decision and to work with stakeholders to develop a plan that balances environmental concerns with the need for affordable and reliable energy,” The Campbell County Government Facebook page wrote in a post announcing the move.

The post also included a link to a petition which will be presented as part of the protest letter, which can be accessed here. In addition to soliciting petition responses, the board will be hosting a public hearing on Thursday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at the Commissioners Chambers, located inside the Campbell County Courthouse at 500 S. Gillette Avenue.

The hearing will allow community members to add their input to the conversation, which commissioners are seeking since changes to the energy industry would have direct impacts locally.

“Your perspectives are valued and will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the potential outcomes,” the post read.

The BLM has also recently announced rule changes to oil leasing regulations that could impact small producers in the state. The topic took up a large portion of the board’s most recent meeting, with several local lawmakers in attendance.
