Benches clear after O’s manager Hyde charges Yankees’ dugout

BALTIMORE — Emotions spilled over between the Yankees and Orioles on Friday evening at Camden Yards after Heston Kjerstad was hit in the helmet by a Clay Holmes pitch during the bottom of the ninth inning.

Kjerstad rose to his feet shortly after the hit-by-pitch on a 96.8 mph sinker, at which time Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde appeared to say something to Holmes. An incensed Hyde would soon be held back by Yankees catcher Austin Wells as he screamed at the Yankees’ bench, sparking heavy jostling between the clubs near home plate.

Hyde was ejected from the game, which the Orioles trailed, 4-1, at the time. Austin Hays replaced Kjerstad, pinch-running at first base, before the Yankees closed out the victory.
