BBB Tips: Father’s Day shopping

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16, 2024, so there are a few shopping days left to pick out the perfect gift for dad, grandpa, or the father figure in your life.

Many people will shop online, although online purchase scams were the riskiest scam affecting people in North America in 2022, according to the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) 2022 Scam Tracker Risk Report.

According to Karen Reeves, president and CEO of BBB of North Alabama, it’s important to be cautious of online purchase scams and all-inclusive packages advertised at steep discounts.

Reeves listed several steps you can take to protect yourself, including carefully reading the fine print: the limitations of purchase, expected delivery date, and source of the product.

If you’re looking at buying a gift card or maybe a package for something like a fishing trip, the BBB said it’s important to check the terms and conditions before you buy. Look out for any possible expiration dates or other limitations.

Sometimes, there are policies that may void the transaction if you don’t follow them, like arrival times, cancellation, or rescheduling processes.

Check to make sure a gift card is valid for in-store and online purchases.

If you’re looking at electronics, clothing, or other gifts for Father’s Day, do your homework!

Reeves said you should do the following:

  • Check the company’s BBB Business Profile by clicking here.
  • Make sure there is a “lock” icon in the web address, and that it begins with “HTTPS” before you place an order or put in credit or debit card information. Both of these indicate the system is secure.

If you order an expensive gift online, you might want to require a signature for the package to keep it from getting stolen from your doorstep.

Some families will rent recreational equipment for fathers, like ATVs, campers, and motorcycles.
Reeves explained that it’s best to get a written contract that includes the following:

  • base rental cost
  • daily fees
  • insurance
  • time restrictions

Before taking that rental out for some fun, check over the vehicle or equipment and get written proof of any existing damage, so you don’t get charged for something you didn’t do!

Reeves also advises against clicking on online coupons that are on social media or in an email.

Unless you’re sure the source is legitimate, these could take you to a malicious website.

Instead, go directly to the company’s website and search for the deal or discount to verify the offer is legitimate.
