ALEA makes dozens of drunk driving, boating arrests over July 4 travel period

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The July 4 holiday travel period ended with numerous arrests as Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Troopers and ALEA Marine Patrol officers took part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Operation Dry Water campaigns.

Troopers set up driver license checkpoints across Alabama during the holidays, which ran from Wednesday, July 3 through Sunday, July 7.

ALEA says it made 48 driving under the influence arrests and 14 boating under the influence arrests as part of its efforts to reduce crashes and speeding, as well as get impaired drivers and boaters off the roads and waterways.

Efforts by ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division resulted in:

• 48 DUI arrests
• 2,429 speeding citations
• 1,211 seat belt/improper child restraint citations

Efforts by ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division resulted in:

• 14 BUI arrests
• 206 Marine Safety citations
• 852 Marine Safety Warnings
• 671 vessel inspections

“With the increase in summer activities and travel, it is imperative that safety remains a top priority for everyone. Please remember to wear your seat belts, put down your phone and other distractions, and never operate a vehicle or boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs,: said ALEA’s Department of Public Safety Director, Colonel Jonathan Archer. “Our Troopers will continue to work diligently to enforce traffic and boating laws to protect the lives of all Alabamians and its visitors.”
