A crowded summer travel season predicted for Reno Tahoe Airport

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -This Memorial Day Weekend is the first big travel holiday for the airport’s new and improved ticketing area.

“This is the first holiday that we’ve had since we’ve opened our ticketing hall back in April,” says Nicolle Staten, Reno Tahoe Airport Public Affairs. “So you might have experienced some tight quarters in here, dust a lot of noise but this holiday we are open. We’ve added 10,000 square feet to this area so a lot more space you’ll have this traveling season.”

And the airport will need it.

14,000 passengers a day will be traveling here from Friday to Monday. That’s 4,000 more a day when compared to an average day at the airport.

Season flights are returning, and Delta has added a new flight to their schedule here in Reno.

“We are adding 90,000 more seats to our travel this summer,” says Staten. “And that’s because of a new flight to Atlanta, and that starts June 7, 2024. And then we also have some seasonal routes that are coming back. We’ve got two that are going to Chicago. We also have Austin, Minneapolis, many destinations that are coming back this summer.”

While there are big changes, there are still some constants.

Like construction.

The far lanes in front of the airport are now closed for improvements, and there are three lanes closer to the facility for pick up and drop off.

Drivers will be competing for spaces at the parking garage as well as the south lot. While we were here the long-term overnight parking was full. As the three-day weekend nears, expect other ‘full” signs to be illuminated, at which point overflow lots will be available.

The best advice: have a family member or friend pick for pick-up and drop off for your travels out of town. It’s less expensive, and there’s less hassle.
