11-year-old central Pa. cancer patient enjoys Make-A-Wish shopping spree

Toys, games, and much more were up for grabs as 11-year-old Make-A-Wish child Devine made his way through the aisles at Target. Today, he was given the chance to go on a once-in-a-lifetime shopping spree.

Devine was first diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and returned last year, according to a press release from Make-A-Wish. (The family’s last name and other personal information were not provided by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.)

Pulling up in style, Devine, his mother, Jackelyn, and his siblings arrived in a white limo at Target. They were met with balloons and a red carpet as they made their grand entrance.

The nonprofit organization, “Bricks For Good,” also helped sponsor Davine’s wish and brought a decked-out Lego cake for him.

Davine said he was impressed by the limo.

“The limo ride was fun! I hope I can ride in one again,” he said.

He got his own Target name tag, grabbed a few carts, and was ready to start shopping.

“I like Legos because they are fun to build, and I can build them with my siblings,” he said. He was able to pick out numerous sets, a few toys for his siblings, a few games like “Jumanji” for him and his family to play, and many other items.

Today, his favorite was the Lego Ninjago set because, as he said, ” It’s big and is going to be fun to build.”

Sherrie Davis has been a Make-A-Wish volunteer for the past 29 years and shared that she enjoys watching the children’s wishes be fulfilled.

“I have seen so many kids get their wishes granted,” Davis said. “The child can finally stop worrying about the medicine and treatment, even if it’s just for a while.”

“Just like today, seeing [Devine’s] smile and his face, seeing him be so happy, and picking out things not only for himself but his little brother and sister too, just touches your heart. That’s a feeling you will never forget”
