AJ Styles quits at Clash at the Castle

While WWE Champion Cody Rhodes is undoubtedly the most over babyface in all of professional wrestling right now, today’s (Sat., June 15, 2024) Clash at the Castle premium live event was taking place at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland. Drew McIntyre challenging for a world title on the same card meant he would be working the main event.

That left Rhodes to open the show for his “I Quit” match against AJ Styles.

You won’t be surprised to learn that they went long — of course they did, considering the stipulation — and maybe even less surprised to learn they fought all around the place.

Perhaps the least surprising of all is the champion getting color about 12 minutes into the proceedings. The crowd chanted expletives at the challenger for daring to harm its hero.

What an atmosphere they created.

Styles went to work on Rhodes, putting an extended beating on him that ultimately saw him actually put Cody to sleep. AJ appealed to the referee to end it and the official had to loudly remind him that this was, in fact, an “I Quit” match and you can only win by forcing your opponent to utter those two words. This cannot happen if the man is asleep.

Rhodes’ mother was in attendance for this match, and she got involved at ringside, yelling at Styles and even slapping him in the face multiple times. He threatened her with a chair but they weren’t wild enough to go with a spot like that.

Strangely enough, Styles never got any help from The OC. Instead, he was handcuffed to the ropes and, unable to get away, and under threat of steel steps being put to his head, decided to say the words to get out of the match.

“I quit.”

The story continues.
