Jayson Werth’s horse victorious at Belmont Stakes
Jayson Werth has gone from champion on the diamond to champion on the racetrack.
The racehorse that Werth co-owns, Dornoch, won the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown, on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. Dornoch put Werth into the winner’s circle 16 years after he was a part of the Phillies’ 2008 World Series title team. The race was moved to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., this year because Belmont Park is undergoing a renovation project.
The 15-year big leaguer who retired in 2018 said prior to last month’s Kentucky Derby that he’s “a nervous wreck” before a race, although co-owning a thoroughbred and watching it race gives him “an adrenaline rush like never before.”
