All 5 Alamo Drafthouse theaters in D-FW area have closed
All five of the Alamo Drafthouse theaters in the Dallas-Fort Worth area closed on Thursday after their franchise operator, Two Is One, One is None LLC, filed for bankruptcy. The theaters are located in Richardson, Las Colinas, Lake Highlands, Dallas and Denton.
In a press release Thursday, the franchise operator cited poor “industry-wide economic performance” in its decision to seek bankruptcy protection. The company also said theatergoing numbers across the industry have not rebounded to their pre-pandemic levels. Contractual obligations required the company to keep open “even the most unprofitable locations,” it said.
“We are grateful to all our employees who put in the work, day in and day out to produce a special movie-going experience and to our many loyal customers for whom it was a pleasure to provide such a special experience,” the statement went on to say.
An Alamo Drafthouse in Minnesota was also closed. More than 600 employees will be impacted by the closures, the press release said.
In a statement Thursday, a spokesperson for Alamo Drafthouse said, “We are heartbroken for the franchisee’s teammates and the local film communities, however, we are working as quickly as possible to get Alamo Drafthouse Cinema back up and running in these cities. All other Alamo Drafthouse locations are operating as normal, with continued expansion plans across the country.”
The Austin-based cinema chain has a few dozen locations in the United States, according to its website. It maintains a presence in Texas with theaters in Austin, Houston, El Paso and Corpus Christi, among other cities.
Alamo Drafthouse has attracted a following nationwide with its in-theater dining and cinematic offerings that go beyond traditional releases to include special anniversary screenings, indie films and Q&As with actors and directors.
