Daniel Jones ranked 23rd on Chris Simms’ QB list

The New York Giants’ primary signal caller, Daniel Jones, ranked 23rd overall on Chris Simms’ annual Top 40 QB List. Last year on the NBC Sports platform, Simms ranked Jones 11th overall. Jones’ injury-plagued 2023 season dropped him 12 spots on Simms’ list. Jones ranked just ahead of DeShaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns.

Here are Simms’ rankings of Jones heading into each of the previous four seasons:

2020: 22nd

2021: 26th

2022: 21st

2023: 11th

2024: 23rd

When providing an explanation on Jones at 23rd, Simms stated that Jones was the hardest guy to peg on the entire list. Simms went on to defend Daniel Jones for the lack of protection and the lack of true receiving talent.

“He’s big, he’s tough, and he’s an exceptional athlete. And he’s a better thrower and passer than he’s given credit for. It’s not sexy; it’s not dynamic. It’s a little machine-like; it doesn’t look that cool…Daniel Jones may lead football in the last five years with throwing strikes while being drilled in the chest.”

Simms then went on to elaborate on the frustrations of Jones. Lack of dynamic passes, sometimes locking in on first reads too long, questionable decisions, and a lack of effect on the team; a lack of pizzazz.

Simms expanded on how he can rectify the pizazz question, which is more personality-based. He explained how Jones needs to comprehensively understand the entire offensive structure while being the first guy in and the last guy out. Many Giants have praised Jones already on the latter point.
