24 Hour Fitness: Memorial Day hours revealed

WORKOUT warriors and fitness enthusiasts rarely take a day off, and holidays are no excuse to stop breaking a sweat.

Plenty of gyms are likely to be closed in observance of Memorial Day 2024, making it difficult for gym-goers to stick to their routines as they struggle to figure out what fitness centers are open.

Is 24 Hour Fitness open on Memorial Day?

24 Hour Fitness is not only the second-largest fitness chain in the US based on revenue but also the fourth-largest chain in the number of clubs.

24 Hour Fitness operates in 11 states and has over 7,500 employees, and, true to its name, each location is typically open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There are some exceptions to this rule, and hours occasionally vary based on the chain’s location.

Fitness enthusiasts hoping to break a sweat at their local 24 Hour Fitness are in luck, however, as the majority of its 280+ locations promise to be open as scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend.

24 Hour Fitness clubs will be open, 24/7, for the entirety of the weekend, including Saturday, May 25, Sunday, May 26, and Memorial Day Monday, May 27.

The last time these gyms had widespread closures were due to Covid-19 when fitness clubs and gyms nationwide were forced to close their doors.

However, gymgoers can kick off the summer season strong by working out and staying in shape at any hour of the day this Memorial Day Weekend.

As always, there may be an exception or two to this rule, so fitness buffs are encouraged to connect with their local 24 Hour Fitness before making any Memorial Day gym plans.

Does 24 Hour Fitness close for any holidays?

Like its name suggests, 24 Hour Fitness rarely closes, even during major federal holidays.

The gym operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with some notable exceptions.

24 Hour Fitness does limit its hours for several days in the winter season, over the winter holidays.

How to get fit in 11 minutes

The chain usually closes its doors at 2 pm on Thanksgiving, and reopens at 5 am the day after Thanksgiving, to work off the turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie the night before.

24 Hour Fitness also closes at 2 pm on Christmas Eve, and is closed for the entirety of Christmas Day.

The chain reopens on December 26 at 5 am local time.

The last of the holiday closures happen on New Year’s Eve, when clubs shut their doors at 6 pm.

They reopen on New Year’s Day at 5 am, perfect for anyone setting New Year’s Resolutions to get healthier and be more active.

Otherwise, 24 Hour Fitness remains open for other federal holidays, including Easter Sunday, the 4th of July, and Labor Day.

All 24 Hour Fitness members are encouraged to use the chain’s Club Finder for the most up-to-date hours, including any changes to opening and closing times.

When was 24 Hour Fitness founded?

24 Hour Fitness was founded in 1983 by Mark Mastrov.

Mastrov is also the chain’s former CEO and part of the Sacramento Kings ownership group.

After making regular visits to a local gym for a knee injury, Mastrov bought out the owner, and turned the facility into a 24-hour fitness space.

He merged with a California-based gym, Family Fitness, in 1996, and changed the gym’s name from 24 Hour Nautilus to 24 Hour Fitness.

The gym hit the mainstream in the 2000s when it became a sponsor of the 2004-2008 US Olympic Teams.

The fitness chain also partnered with NBC to develop a weight loss competition show, The Biggest Loser.

The club eventually expanded worldwide, with locations in Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, but became exclusive to the US after its subsidiary, CalFit, was sold to a Hong Kong company.

In June 2020, 24 Hour Fitness declared bankruptcy as a result of Covid-19, but managed to remain intact after closing several dozen gyms.

As of May 2024, 24 Hour Fitness owns over 280 clubs in 11 states, including:
