AI-Driven Demand for Accelerated Computing Causes Enterprises Worldwide to Evaluate Infrastructure Deployment and Modernization Strategies
Abstract
This IDC Survey presents a worldwide view of IT buyer assessments of how rising demand for accelerated computing to support AI workloads is driving organizations to reevaluate workload deployment choices, consider new ways to reduce infrastructure costs, and prioritize server modernization.
A majority (68%) of organizations worldwide are currently deploying or planning to deploy accelerated computing platforms such as GPUs, DPUs, and FPGAs to support new compute-intensive workloads such as GenAI, predictive AI, and automated operational technologies in factories and at edge locations. Data in this survey was collected as part of IDC’s March 2024 Future Enterprise Resiliency and Spending Survey, Wave 3, which includes the input of 887 IT decision-makers in North America, Asia/Pacific, and Western Europe.
“IDC’s research shows that most organizations are examining infrastructure deployment choices quarterly, or more frequently, and are actively prioritizing server modernization and consolidation to reduce costs and improve sustainability and operational efficiency,” explains Mary Johnston Turner, IDC’s research vice president, Future of Digital Infrastructure Agenda. “We see that as-a-service options, including public cloud IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS solutions, are increasingly preferred as deployment options for accelerated computing resources.”
