Walmart to cut up to 600 corporate jobs in Bay Area across two offices
Retail giant Walmart will cut up to 600 corporate jobs across two offices in the Bay Area. Recent filings in California’s Employment Development Department show that the cuts will come in the coming months.
The majority of job losses will come in the eCommerce corporate office in San Bruno, where 388 jobs are expected to be axed. Meanwhile, another 180 jobs are due to be cut at the Walmart Labs office in Sunnyvale. In total, 568 will be cut across the company.
Donna Morris, a Walmart company executive said the retail giant is cutting hundreds of corporate jobs nationwide, according to a memo obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, reports SF Gate.
“While the overall numbers are small in percentage, we are focused on supporting each of our associates affected by these changes,” Morris wrote in the memo, reports the Chronicle. The memo did not specify why the jobs were being cut, however, in its notice to the state, Walmart confirmed that the cuts were primarily for staff who worked from home.
Not all 568 employees impacted will lose their jobs, however. Many will have the option to relocate to other Walmart facilities, such as Bentonville, Arkansas, which has a new corporate campus. There is also the option to take a different position within the company, the note seen by the San Francisco Chronicle said.
