Memorial Day travel could be its busiest in nearly two decades

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – This Memorial Day weekend could be the busiest for travel in nearly 20 years.

According to AAA, 43.8 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles. Airlines are preparing for more travelers this holiday weekend, but the majority of people are expected to hit the roads to get to their destinations.

AAA is expecting a five percent bump in airline travel over last year with 3.5 million passengers taking to the skies. Meanwhile, the organization is predicting 38.4 million people will drive, marking a four percent increase from last year.

Many people driving to their destination are likely wondering what gas is going to cost. Experts say it is similar to this time last year. AAA says the average price for gas in North Carolina is $3.36, and $3.21 in South Carolina.

AAA expects the roads will be busiest from noon to 7 p.m. on the Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day. Those returning home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

For people flying this holiday weekend, they are recommended to download the CLT airport app. There, travelers can book parking and keep an eye on flight statuses.
