Tiger Woods, Jon Rahm Among Notables to Miss Historically Low Cut at PGA

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The second round of the PGA Championship wrapped up Saturday morning, with the cut falling at a historic 1 under par.

A total of 78 players, the most ever to make the cut in a major, will compete the rest of the weekend at Valhalla Golf Club, with the third round starting later Saturday morning off split tees. Xander Schauffele leads at 12 under, one shot ahead of Collin Morikawa and two ahead of Sahith Theegala.

The 1 under cut line is the first under-par cut in a PGA Championship and one of only three majors ever with one; the 1990 British Open at St. Andrews and 2006 Open at Royal Liverpool also had 1-under cuts. Valhalla has seen little wind over the first two rounds and its greens have been softened by rain.

Tiger Woods finished well outside the cut at 7 over, doomed after a pair of triple bogeys early in his second round. The 15-time major champion missed his 13th major cut.

Three top-10 players in the world are going home. Wyndham Clark (world No. 4) shot 75 on Friday to miss by five shots, Jon Rahm (No. 5) had a streak of 18 consecutive major cuts snapped after missing the cut by one shot and Ludvig Aberg (No. 6) also missed the cut by one.

Matt Fitzpatrick also missed the cut by a shot, meaning the last three U.S. Open champions (Clark, Fitzpatrick and Rahm) are all leaving Kentucky early.

Eleven of the 16 members of LIV Golf in the field will play on. Bryson DeChambeau (9 under), Brooks Koepka (7 under) and Lucas Herbert and Dean Burmester (6 under) are in contention. Talor Gooch, the most controversial of the special invitees into the PGA, made the cut at 1 under. Dustin Johnson shot a Friday 68 to also make the cut on the number.

Tommy Fleetwood eagled his last hole Friday evening to make the cut on the number. The last player to eagle his 36th hole to make a cut on the number was Hideki Matsuyama, also at a Valhalla PGA Championship in 2014.

Two of the 21 PGA club professionals in the field made the cut: Jeremy Wells (2 under) and Braden Shattuck (1 under).
