Sutton Foster Will Star in ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ on Broadway
Sutton Foster will star in Once Upon a Mattress on Broadway this summer.
The production, a new adaptation by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Amy Sherman-Palladino, moves to Broadway after a two-week run at New York City Center’s Encores this past winter. The musical, directed by Lear deBessonet, will play the Hudson Theatre starting July 31, with an opening night set for Aug. 12.
The Broadway limited engagement will run through Nov. 30, before it moves to Los Angeles for a four-week run at the Center Theatre Groups’ Ahmanson Theatre starting Dec. 10.
Additional casting for the Broadway run has not yet been announced. At City Center, Foster starred opposite Michael Urie.
The musical, an updated take on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea, features music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book byJay Thompson, Dean Fuller,and Marshall Barer. It was first produced on Broadway in 1959, with Carol Burnett in the lead role as Princess Winifred, an unabashed and sometimes uncouth potential bride for the prince. There has since been one Broadway revival, which began in December 1996, starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
This continues to a busy theater season for Foster, who starred in Once Upon a Mattress and then immediately jumped into Sweeney Todd on Broadway as Mrs. Lovett, opposite Aaron Tveit. That run ended May 5. Foster starred in The Music Man, opposite Hugh Jackman, from February 2022 through Jan, 15, 2023. Foster, who recently starred in Younger, previously worked with Sherman-Palladino on the television show Bunheads.
The musical is produced by Seaview and Creative Partners Productions. The Broadway production will feature choreography by Lorin Latarro, scenic design by David Zinn, lighting design by Justin Townsend, costume design by Andrea Hood and sound design by Kai Harada.
