Netflix has given a series greenlight to Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, a horror drama from executive producers The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt, via their Upside Down Pictures overall deal with Netflix. The series is created by Haley Z. Boston, who will serve as executive producer and showrunner of her own passion-project series at the age of 29.
Additionally, Andrea Sperling (Transparent, Murder at the End of the World) has been tapped to executive produce via an overall deal she has signed with Netflix.
The series’ official logline makes a cheeky reference to its title: Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is an atmospheric horror series set at a wedding, following a bride and groom in the week leading up to their ill-fated nuptials. That’s not a spoiler – just read the title…
“We were knocked flat when we first read Haley’s script. She is a major new talent with a singular voice — her writing is twisted, terrifying, funny, and just… very Haley,” the Duffer Brothers said. “We feel so lucky to be producing her first show, and we can’t wait to share her vision with the rest of the world.”
Boston is a homegrown Netflix talent with genre pedigree. She previously wrote on the streamer’s Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Brand New Cherry Flavor.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with dream partners Matt, Ross and Hilary to bring this unexpected and spine-tingling story to life through Haley’s uniquely riveting vision,” said Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s VP, Scripted Series (US & Canada).
The Duffer Brothers are currently in production on the final season of their Netflix mega hit Stranger Things. They also serve as creative producers on the Olivier Award-winning West End production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Since the launch of Upside Down Pictures with Hilary Leavitt in 2022, the company has developed multiple series, with The Boroughs first to go into production this fall. It is currently casting. Upside Down’s development slate includes a live-action series adaptation of Death Note and a Stranger Things animated series.
Boston’s directorial debut, Beach Logs Kill, premiered at SXSW this year in the Narrative Shorts Competition. She is repped by Kaplan/Perrone and Yorn, Levine, Barnes. The Duffers are with CAA and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.
