Mets reach deep for tense win over Phils in 11 innings

PHILADELPHIA — Following the Mets’ third consecutive loss to the Phillies on Wednesday, manager Carlos Mendoza walked a circle around the postgame clubhouse and spoke individually, or in small groups, with everyone on the roster. Mendoza, who loathes the idea of team meetings, was reluctant to call this one. But the manager also acknowledged that at an early low point of the season, somebody needed to say something.

“I thought it was a good time just — again, I don’t want to call it a meeting, but just more like a walkthrough after the game with guys,” Mendoza said, “making sure that they’re keeping their heads up.”

Only time will tell if that not-a-meeting meeting will do anything to affect the Mets’ season. So far, they have but a singular data point: their 6-5, 11-inning, come-from-behind win at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, which allowed the Mets to salvage one of four games from the Phillies.

New York took the lead for good in the 11th inning on a J.D. Martinez RBI single, scoring automatic runner Francisco Lindor.

The Mets also went ahead in the first and eighth innings, but the Phillies came back to tie the game on both occasions. The second of those was a blown save for Edwin Díaz, his third in his last four opportunities.

Pete Alonso homered for the Mets, while Jose Quintana took a no-decision after holding the Phillies to two runs in 5 1/3 innings.
