7 N.Y. supermarkets closing as popular chain shutters 32 across the nation
Stop & Shop is closing 32 of its supermarket stores across the nation, including seven locations in New York.
On Friday, the supermarket announced that the stores will close on or before Nov. 2, 2024.
Staten Island has five Stop & Shop locations that are not affected by the closures.
Gordon Reid, Stop & Shop’s president, noted that the closures are “part of a strategy to grow the brand,” and comes a month after announcing the company would close “underperforming” Northeast stores.
In a statement released, Reid announced that Stop & Shop “evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”
Reid also noted that the company noted stores that were outperforming other Stop & Shop stores haven’t been remodeled. “We’re taking these learnings and implementing them at other stores as we build upon our strong foundation, similar to our new Boston flagship location, opened last month in the Allston Yards development,” Reid continued.
According to Reid, any employees working at the affected stores will be offered opportunities at other locations within the company.
