The story of this match was largely Paolini attempting to subdue the attacking threat of her more powerful opponent. Krejcikova has the greater weight of shot and, in the first set, did far more attacking than Paolini, who was largely forced to play on the back foot.
In the first set, Krejcikova spent 29 per cent of the time attacking (according to IBM’s metrics), compared to 18 per cent by Paolini. Paolini’s greater aggression in the second set saw her wrestle control back, spending 24 per cent of the time attacking, compared to Krejcikova’s figure of 23 per cent.
Krejcikova realised that her opponent wasn’t going to beat herself, and in the decider, to her credit, stepped up the aggression. By the time she grabbed the decisive break in the third set to lead 4-3, the attacking figures were back in Krejcikova’s favour in a huge swing from the second set.
Paolini fought to keep the match alive, but it wasn’t enough. Krejcikova was back on the front foot and this time, despite a nervy final game where she had to fend off break points, she didn’t look back.
