Dak Prescott dealing with foot sprain as photo of Cowboys QB in walking boot surfaces

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been wearing a protective boot on his right foot because of a foot sprain, a person with knowledge of his health told The Dallas Morning News.

The person said the injury isn’t serious and Prescott had worn the boot for a week. The injury became known when a picture was taken of Prescott walking with his girlfriend while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas. That photo was posted on social media.

How Prescott suffered the injury isn’t known but the Cowboys last held an organized workout on June 5, which was the final practice of the two-day mandatory minicamp.

The Cowboys’ have their first training camp practice on July 25.

Prescott underwent season-ending surgery for a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in 2020 after suffering the injury in a Week 5 victory over the New York Giants. Prescott hasn’t encountered any known injury to the right ankle since the surgery.

Prescott also missed five games of the 2022 season with a fractured right thumb on his throwing hand.

Last season, Prescott led the NFL in completions (410) and touchdown passes (36) while leading the Cowboys to a NFC East division title. Prescott, who also threw for 4,516 yards, the second most in his career, was runner up in the MVP voting to Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The quarterback enters the final year of his contract with a base salary of $29 million for the 2024 season.

Cowboys’ officials hope to extend Prescott, but contract talks haven’t progressed. There’s an expectation as the Cowboys get closer to the start of training camp that negotiations might increase.

This latest injury doesn’t appear to impede that progress. When Prescott was injured in 2020, he was playing on the franchise tag and in the offseason of 2021, he signed a four-year $160 million deal with $126 million guaranteed.
