AAA Texas says travel is increasing for Independence Day; Here’s how to plan your trip
HOUSTON (KIAH) — As we approach Independence Day, travelers are already making plans to celebrate. AAA Texas says that roughly 5.6 million people across Texas will travel for this Independence Day holiday. The numbers show that this is a 5.2% increase over last year.
Over 70.9 million travelers will commute 50 miles or more from home over the holiday travel period. AAA Texas anticipates that the top destinations for travel are Galveston, Corpus Christi, state parks, San Antonio River, Fredericksburg, the Texas Hill Country, Houston, Dallas and Austin.
Most Texans will be traveling by car for the holiday. Gas prices are lower than last year when the unleaded average was $3.14. Prices will likely continue to go down leading up to the holiday. AAA Texas expects the prices to level off and remain stable until after Labor Day. As we continue through hurricane season, gas prices could be affected if a storm impacts Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.
Travel Tips:
- Inspect your vehicle before travel including your battery, tires and fluid levels
- Pack food, water, emergency kit, first-aid kit and mobile phone charger
- Plan your flights early and arrive at the airport at least two hours ahead to save you time
- Consider travel insurance
- Reserve your airport parking ahead of time
- Book summer travel now: High demand and reduced schedules mean fewer options
If commuting by car, plan ahead for busier roads. The worst time to travel by car before and on July 4th are between 2 – 7 p.m.. AAA Texas recommends traveling in the morning and if returning on Monday, July 8th, avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.
