Major General performs 25 pull-ups without breaking into a sweat: ‘That sets a benchmark’, say netizens

The internet is in awe of Indian Army Major General Prasanna Joshi who recently aced 25 pull-ups without a break. Sharing the video on X, retired Lt Col JS Sodhi wrote: “Salute and respect to the physical fitness of Major General Prasanna Joshi of the Indian Army. No wonder the Indian Army has been rated as the finest fighting force in the world by the German publication Statista in October 2022. Proud of the Indian Army. Jai Hind! #IndianArmy”.

As expected, the now-viral video caught the attention of netizens who lauded the armed personnel’s fitness level. “Absolutely beautiful. That’s what real fitness looks like. Kudos to the real heroes,” one wrote, while another commented, “That’s real endurance that comes from dedication and devotion for fitness. That sets a benchmark for others to follow. When you love your body and don’t cheat with your food habits it will reap a fortune in the near future. Health is our biggest asset.”

Why is it a commendable feat?

The Major General’s ability to do 25 pull-ups without breaking a sweat is a testament to his overall fitness level and muscle endurance, said Palak Dengla, chief physiotherapist, Aster RV Hospital, Bengaluru. “It’s important to note that regular exercise, regardless of intensity, can lead to improved physical fitness and overall health,” said Dengla.

According to her, exercise doesn’t have to be grueling to be effective. “Low-intensity bodyweight exercises such as yoga, or stretching can improve flexibility, strength, and balance,” Dengla told indianexpress.com.

Dengla stressed that exercise is about listening to your body and finding what works best for you. “It’s not always about pushing yourself to the limit,” she stressed.

What are pull-ups?

Bodyweight exercises are strength-training exercises that use your own body as resistance, in most cases, not requiring any additional weights. “These exercises leverage your body’s weight to build muscle, improve flexibility, and enhance overall fitness. Popular examples include push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, and planks,” shared fitness expert Garima Goyal.

Why should you do pull-ups?

Pull-ups work the back, biceps, and shoulders. “Incorporate different exercises, such as changing grip positions or trying new workout modalities, to keep your muscles challenged and responsive to growth stimuli,” Goyal mentioned.

All you need is a horizontal bar. “Hang from the bar with an overhand grip, pull your body up until your chin is above the bar, then lower back down with control,” said Goyal.

If you are a beginner, modify with assisted pull-ups or inverted rows, added Goyal.
