Capcom Nonchalantly Announces Resident Evil 9

With the remakes of the remasters of the reissues of the remakes, it does feel like there are always approximately 372 different Resident Evil games in development at any one time. However, brand new ones are a more rare treat, and that’s what was nonchalantly confirmed by Capcom last night. Resident Evil 9, although it almost definitely won’t be called that, is in the works, and it’s being directed by Resident Evil 7‘s Koshi Nakanishi.

As IGN brought to our attention, a new Resident Evil, the first since 2021’s Resident Evil Village, was mentioned during July 1’s Capcom NEXT broadcast. “We’re making a new Resident Evil,” said Biohazard director Nakanishi, as if it were no big deal, while plugging news that the mobile version of RE7 is now out on Apple mobiles.

During the internal interview, Nakanishi explains, “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after 7. But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial.”

He continued saying that he was unable to share any more details, but it’s interesting to note that this followed on from the director explaining that his work on RE7 was about re-orientating a series that had gone off the rails, had become too action focused, and was not nearly scary enough. Biohazard had been about returning to those franchise origins, so it seems a fair bet there’s a very similar focus for the ninth mainline entry.

It was a pretty huge piece of news, casually dropped in the middle of an otherwise rather flat half hour. The opening news was more detail on Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, which Ethan is certainly excited to play, but isn’t perhaps a name that is capturing the nation. Then came a very peculiar conflation of Dead Rising’s remaster, and Resident Evil 7‘s mobile remastering, the two games seemingly interrupting each other’s sections in the strangest fashion. And in the middle of all that, oh yeah, we’re making a new Resi Evil.

In the meantime, if the leaks are true you can also look forward to remakes of obht Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. The latter being remade for a record 9,000th time.
