2024 Gotham TV Awards: ‘Baby Reindeer,’ ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith,’ ‘Colin From Accounts’ Top Winners
Baby Reindeer, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Colin From Accounts were the top winners at the first-ever Gotham TV Awards, which took place in New York on Tuesday night.
Accepting for breakthrough limited series, the final award of the night, Baby Reindeer star and creator Richard Gadd offered a thoughtful observation about the Netflix show’s popularity and some advice for anyone going through a difficult time.
“It’s weird that a show as messed up as this has gone on to strike a chord with so many people,” Gadd said of darkly comic thriller. “I think it speaks to the fact that I think a lot of people in the world are struggling right now. I don’t know much in the way of advice, but I do know that nothing lasts forever. So if you are in a rut, just keep going. Persevere, persevere, persevere and I promise you things will get better.”
Early on, Colin From Accounts swept the comedy categories, winning breakthrough comedy series and outstanding performance in a comedy series (Harriet Dyer).
Accepting both awards, co-creator and star Dyer said she was “overwhelmed” and dedicated the honors to her husband and Colin From Accounts co-creator and fellow star Patrick Brammall, who she called the “other half of this show” and said she “can’t do the show without him.”
But she noted Brammall was back in Australia taking care of their child, “because fuck the patriarchy,” she said laughing, with the comment earning cheers from the audience.
In the drama categories, Mr. and Mrs. Smith won breakthrough drama series, though the award was accepted by executive producer Anthony Katagas not co-creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, while 3 Body Problem‘s Zine Tseng won outstanding performance in a drama series.
Tseng seemed truly surprised by her win, telling the audience and The Hollywood Reporter before Tuesday night’s show that her “money was on someone else” to win.
Joking onstage that she’s “so sober,” Tseng also said that this was her first time being nominated for anything and first time in New York.
Of the city, Tseng said, “it smells like a big gas station and danger and freedom at the same time.”
The limited series categories were also split with Baby Reindeer winning the top prize and Ripley‘s Andrew Scott winning outstanding performance in a limited series, which was accepted by Ripley creator Steven Zaillian, who said onstage that he wasn’t sure where his star was.
The award for breakthrough nonfiction series went to Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show.
During his acceptance speech, Carmichael said, “I want to thank the team for trying to find the truth and make it entertaining.”
He then joked to the audience, “Congratulations to everyone on network-sponsored travel. Please get as much money from them as you can.”
The Gotham TV Awards also presented tributes to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay, The Crown creator Peter Morgan and Expats creator Lulu Wang.
Stephanie March presented the Anniversary Tribute to her close friend and former co-star Hargitay.
“I get to go to work every day on a show that makes people feel less alone,” Hargitay said during her speech. “That’s one of the most devastating effects of sexual assault, domestic violence is the isolation.”
She praised Law & Order: SVU for telling the stories of women and survivors “across the spectrum of gender identity.”
“This is a show about treating people who’ve been harmed with care and with dignity and with compassion and empathy and kindness after they’ve experienced some of the worst of what we’ve done to each other,” Hargitay said.
The Crown actress Lesley Manville presented the Creator Tribute to Morgan.
Morgan began by describing an initial meeting he had with Netflix in January 2014 in “a small shared office in Beverly Hills.”
“For once, and I genuinely think the only time, in my career walked into right room at right time and actually pitched something people wanted to hear,” Morgan said of The Crown, which aired its sixth and final season in late 2023. “Television is just not what television used to be. It’s extraordinary. I look at the other shows nominated here tonight — they’re all cinema.”
And Expats castmembers Sarayu Blue, Ji-young Yoo and Brian Tee presented the Spotlight Tribute to Wang.
Wang recalled how Expats was made during the pandemic while her grandmother was dying.
“The world got to know her through The Farewell but after traveling the world with the film, and after the film completely changed my life, I couldn’t even go to say goodbye to her and I never got to thank her,” Wang said of her grandmother. “There was so much I didn’t get a chance to say and Expats became a meditation on grief and the humility of uncertainty.”
The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced less than two months ago that it would be spinning off the TV awards that had, for the past decade, been presented as part of the main Gotham Awards film and TV ceremony that typically takes place after Thanksgiving.
The following month, The Gotham announced the nominees in seven categories (breakthrough comedy, drama, limited and nonfiction series and outstanding performances in comedy, drama and limited series) for the Gotham TV Awards. Like the Gotham film awards, the TV awards categories are gender-neutral.
The timing of the new TV awards ceremony got an early shoutout from presenter Joel Kim Booster, who said it was “so much nicer than coming to the film awards in the dead of winter.”
His co-presenter Susie Essman jokingly fired back, “You L.A. people are so lame. Just put on a coat and you’re fine.” And she welcomed the audience to the start of a New York summer, or as she called it, “hot garbage smell season.”
The Curse, Shogun and Bodkin scored three nominations each, followed by the following double nominees: Colin From Accounts, Gen V, Fallout, Black Cake, Baby Reindeer, Under the Bridge, Ripley and The Sympathizer. Colin From Accounts was the only project to win multiple awards, with all of the triple nominees shut out. Also failing to win any awards Tuesday night were Gen V, Fallout, Black Cake, Under the Bridge and The Sympathizer.
The Gotham TV Awards nominations were selected by committees of critics, journalists, programmers and curators. Winners were determined by separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in making TV and film.
At the 2023 Gotham Awards, which incidentally took place prior to the strike-delayed 2023 Emmys, Beef, which had the most nominations in the TV categories with three nods, swept the TV awards with two prizes (two nominations were in the same category). The limited series won breakthrough series under 40 minutes, and star Ali Wong won outstanding performance in a new series, beating out her onscreen counterpart Steven Yeun.
