10 Best All-inclusive Resorts in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations in Mexico for a beach vacation. While the city was once a boho backpacker town with sandy streets and a handful of palapa-topped restaurants, today it is a veritable beachfront hotspot with hundreds of restaurants, sizzling entertainment, colorful nightlife, and many resorts. Travelers are drawn to its fluffy, white sand, the gentle rolls of turquoise-colored waves, and the opportunity to post up poolside with a good book and a strong margarita.
The Mexican Caribbean coastline is renowned for its all-inclusive resorts, each promising to offer a little slice of heaven, complete with beachfront, diverse dining, and tranquil spas. It can be overwhelming to narrow the search and decipher which Playa del Carmen all-inclusive resort is the one to book. Whether you’re looking to explore the streets of Playa del Carmen or disappear into a wellness escape, our picks for the best all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen can help you make the choice. I have spent the past 15 years covering Mexico, and in that time I have visited dozens of properties in the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen area. This list combines Travel + Leisure award winners and editor-loved properties, recognizing these hotels for top-notch amenities, activities, and beautiful rooms and suites.

El Dorado Maroma is one of Playa del Carmen’s all-inclusive jewels, and its location is on a sun-bleached stretch of sand that is the envy of many other beaches in the region. This adults-only resort, a World’s Best Award winner in 2023, is known for its quiet, low-key atmosphere. But just because it’s relaxed on vibes doesn’t mean it lacks things to do. On the contrary, El Dorado Maroma is packed with amenities, including 11 restaurants and bars, multiple pools, a spa, and a fitness center. I must admit that the food across the resort is not as impressive as at other all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, but I was very impressed with the cuisine at the beachfront restaurant, Lima Limon. The small resort has many room categories, but the Mi Hotelito Beachfront Suites are the best. These rooms are just a few steps from the swimming pool and the beach and have a balcony or terrace. El Dorado Maroma is also home to some of the only over-water bungalows in Mexico. Called the Palafitos, these luxe suites operate like a hotel within the hotel, featuring private infinity pools, glass bottom floors, ladders directly into the ocean, and a private restaurant for Palafitos guests only.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is one of the original all-inclusive luxury resorts to open in this part of the country. The reason it’s stuck around for so long is because of its reputation for being one of the most indulgent resorts in Mexico. The all-suite hotel, a 2021 World’s Best Awards winner, boasts a generous stretch of beachfront and mangroves and cenotes on the property. Rooms here are some of the largest in the region, with entry-level suites starting at 1,100 square feet with private plunge pools. Guests needn’t lift a finger with the assistance of private butler service, though the more adventurous guests can take advantage of activities like kayaking and scuba diving. Dining options give foodies something different to look forward to each night, whether it’s elegant French fare with a vintage vibe, casual beachfront dining, romantic Mexican cuisine with live music, or a fusion of flavors from across Asia. Wellness gurus will fawn over the SE Spa by Grand Velas, a veritable playground for holistic healing, including hydrotherapy, massages, and ancient rituals.

When I first heard that Hotel Xcaret Mexico had 900 rooms (in addition to the 900 rooms at its newer adults-only Hotel Xcaret Arte next door), I was overwhelmed, to say the least. But all feelings of hesitancy washed away. Yes, Hotel Xcaret Mexico is one of the largest in the region, but you’d hardly know it because of how the hotel is laid out and just how many places there are to play at this palatial all-inclusive paradise. A winner of the World’s Best Awards in 2021 and 2023, Hotel Xcaret Mexico’s rooms are spread across five distinct Casas, each named for an element. For guests who want an adults-only experience within Hotel Xcaret, book Casa Fuego, the only casa reserved exclusively for adults and has a private reception, gym, and an Italian-Mexican restaurant for only Casa Fuego guests. Diners are spoiled for choice regarding culinary options, as the resort has 12 restaurants, including one helmed by Carlos Gaytan, Mexico’s first chef to earn a Michelin star. Families love this resort for its beautiful pools and the unlimited, all-inclusive access to any of Grupo Caret’s theme parks — transportation included. I also want to note that Hotel Xcaret Arte is equally impressive, and guests who want an excellent adults-only experience can book a stay at the neighboring mirror-image resort.

Mahekal Beach Resort has been one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen for years. I love the luxe, castaway-style vibe from its palapa-topped bungalows, secluded pools that feel like secret grottoes, and prime beachfront access to one of Playa del Carmen’s fluffiest white-sand beaches. The resort is also within walking distance of Fifth Avenue, so visitors have the best of both worlds when choosing a beachfront or city hotel. Perhaps all of these reasons are why the resort has been a World’s Best Award winner in 2021, 2022, and 2023. The boho-chic beachfront resort has under 200 rooms, and guests can choose from a garden or ocean view. The grounds boast four swimming pools, three bars, three restaurants, and a spa with a gym. Public spaces feature giant poufs on the sand, strings of twinkle lights, and shabby chic ocean-style decor. Fuego Restaurante y Cantina is my favorite restaurant option because of its succulent seafood, pizzas, and grilled specialties.

This adults-only resort often flies below the radar because it is so low-key. But that’s precisely what its loyal band of repeat guests love about it. The 540-room Valentin Imperial Maya, a Word’s Best winner in 2022 and 2023, draws visitors thanks to its meandering stretch of stark white sand, lazy river-style pool, and spacious, well-appointed suites. Entry-level suites are the Deluxe Juniors, which are 516 square feet and feature jetted bathtubs, balconies, or ground-floor terraces. Guests can choose from the 11 bars and seven a la carte restaurants. Note that a dress code is required at every restaurant. For limited mobility guests, it is worth mentioning that the resort grounds are expansive, and it can take 10 minutes to get from one end of the resort to the other.

First, the location at Hilton Playa del Carmen cannot be beaten. When visiting Playa del Carmen, part of the magic is being within the city itself. However, for travelers who don’t want to sacrifice a proper beach holiday, the Hilton offers the best of both worlds — if you can pull yourself away from the fabulous food and drinks included. The modern beachfront resort centers its action around its spacious pool deck. By day, the vibe is lively (without being too party-heavy), with entertainment and music. For those who want more tranquility, a quieter pool is secluded in a different section of the property. Rooms at the resort are spacious and well-lit, with double-jetted tubs in the room. Dining options include seven lounges and bars, a la carte restaurants, buffets, and 24-hour in-room dining. All restaurants require reservations, so try to make those as early as possible. The spa boasts a hydrotherapy circuit that includes a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, and hydro tubs. Activities abound, from a gym and rooftop tennis court to themed evening entertainment.

If La Casa de La Playa received a report card, it would read “Exceeds Expectations” across the board. Often described by guests as “the best hotel in Riviera Maya,” this all-inclusive, intimate resort has truly thought of everything. It starts with a private transfer from the Cancun airport — included in the room rate — before checking into one of the 63 luxurious suites. Each with its own personality, the rooms are divided among three buildings: Natural, Fiesta, and Wellness. But each room is supremely luxurious, and all include private en-suite pools, premium dining, exclusive activities in the Grupo Xcaret Parks, and sailing excursions aboard Xcaret Xailing. Oh yes, Casa de La Playa is part of the Xcaret family, like Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Xcaret Arte. Among the exclusive touches to the hotel include a 40-meter infinity pool that extends over the sea and a restaurant helmed by celebrity chef Martha Ortiz. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, are the tailor-made experiences, from private dinners in a cenote to customized massages in the Muluk Spa.

Relaxed and romantic, with a totally secluded atmosphere thanks to its 500 acres of beautiful beachfront. Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun is a paradise for couples. Guests check into one of the 412 luxury suites. Suites feature two-person whirlpool tubs and private balconies, while ground-floor rooms are swim-up suites. Club-level rooms have additional amenities like private lounges and beach club access, and a daily continental breakfast served in the lounge or a la carte breakfast at the Beach Club. Couples can post up at the two oceanfront pools or steal away to the spa for a couples massage. One of the most romantic restaurants is Bordeaux, which has a wine theme and a wine cellar with more than 200 labels. Guests can also choose from Italian, Mexican, pan-Asian, seafood, and many other options.

This adults-only resort has fantastic food, a great pool scene, and a beautiful, quiet beach.
Playa del Carmen has a long list of all-inclusive resorts, but I will never get tired of UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya. This adults-only, all-inclusive resort has a little bit of everything and can chameleon itself to fit any vibe. From live DJ sessions at the main pool for a party feel to deep soaking tubs on private balconies for more intimate and quiet moments, UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya is about having guests choose their own adventure. The spacious suites are among my favorites in the area, notably the Alto Ocean View Kings on the hotel’s highest floor. Every room has a cozy, sweatshirt-style bathrobe you may never want to part with. Restaurants here are fabulous — Cueva Siete for Mexican cuisine and Mura House for Japanese are two of the most popular. Reservations are strongly suggested. The spa is gorgeous and features a hydrotherapy facility. Once upon a time, massages were included as part of the all-inclusive package, which was a fantastic incentive, but sadly, that perk is no longer available.

Cushioned between a white sand beach and a thick, green jungle, Palmaïa exudes a completely Mexican Caribbean vibe. The boho-chic, haute hippie design sets the scene for a crowd looking for utter relaxation with a healthy dash of wellness and reconnection. The foundation for the wellness program at Palmaïa stems from ancient holistic healing rituals, where the central Architects of Life Programme guides guests on a daily journey, whether it is sunrise breath work, cacao ceremonies, or purification rituals. The Atlantis spa is where travelers can go deeper, with innovative massages, body treatments, and even temazcal sessions. Restaurants feature mostly plant-based menus, though those who swing a little more carnivore can always add protein. While the resort is family-friendly, rooms are divided among adults-only and family sections, so for travelers who don’t want the sounds of children as part of their daily rituals, there’s a solution to that. Adults do have their own pool section, as well.

Know Before You Go
Plan around sargassum season.
While Playa del Carmen and the surrounding Riviera Maya region have a (well-deserved) reputation for sparkling white sand beaches, these beaches do fall prey to seasonal sargassum. This sargassum, or the stinky seaweed that piles up on shore, can last from April to October. If you’re traveling to Playa del Carmen during that time, you may want to consider all-inclusive resorts that have fabulous pools and great amenities.
Bring pesos for tipping.
Yes, you are at an all-inclusive resort, where gratuities are (usually) included. But on the chance you want to slip your favorite waiter or concierge a little something extra, it’s best to have pesos on hand. You may see a lot of other tourists tipping in U.S. dollars, but it’s a lot easier for your hosts if you tip them in their local currency.
Expect traffic.
The Cancun area is expanding to keep up with the high demand of travelers. In fact, Tulum recently opened its own airport to help combat the massive influx of travelers. Still, with lots of travelers comes many infrastructure projects and, potentially, a lot of traffic. Be patient and plan for extra time, whether that’s getting to your hotel or returning back to the airport.
How We Chose These Hotels
Choosing the very best all-inclusive resorts in and around Playa del Carmen is a daunting task simply because there are so many great ones to choose from. Several of the hotels on this list made the cut because they’ve earned a coveted spot in our annual World’s Best awards, in which hundreds of thousands of T+L readers vote on their favorite hotels around the globe. You can see the 2023 winners here.
In addition to those award-winning properties, author Meagan Drillinger contributed her expertise. She has spent the past 15 years covering Mexico and in that time has visited dozens of properties in the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen area. She also consulted her colleagues and pored over hundreds of reviews. To make her selection, she focused on her personal experiences, as well as the experiences of others who have described everything from check-in to check-out, and every meal, activity, and spa treatment in between. Her experience as a travel writer has taken her to hundreds of hotels all around the world.
And finally, as with all our hotel roundups, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values.
